Indonesia Receives First ITBM-600/KHAN Ballistic Missile System in Major Defense Milestone

Indonesia has taken delivery of its first ITBM-600/KHAN ballistic missile system, marking a significant step forward in the country’s long-term efforts to modernize its medium to long-range indirect fire capabilities. The delivery is part of a major defense agreement involving Excalibur International, a Czech defense firm under the Czechoslovak Group (CSG), and Roketsan, a prominent Turkish missile manufacturer.

The deal, originally signed in 2022, is valued at over 500 million euros and represents one of Indonesia’s largest recent investments in strategic firepower. While scale models and promotional mockups of the KHAN system had been showcased at various defense exhibitions over the past few years, it was not until IDEF 2025 in Istanbul that the first fully operational launcher was revealed to the public.

This acquisition places Indonesia among a very limited group of Southeast Asian nations capable of fielding a road-mobile tactical ballistic missile system of this caliber. The ITBM-600/KHAN missile is believed to be based on the BORA ballistic missile developed by Roketsan, and is designed for rapid deployment and precision strikes at ranges estimated between 280 to 295 kilometers, depending on payload configuration.

The system is mounted on Tatra T-815-7 trucks produced by the Tatra group. Additionally the system likely uses a mix of armored and un-armored cabs, as the launcher has been seen with a armored cab, while support vehicles may not necessarily use armored cabs. Furthermore the final configuration of the System including that of the Launcher appears to be fairly different than the initial configuration presented in the form of Mockups by Excalibur Intl.

Although Excalibur International has not released detailed information regarding the exact number of launchers or support vehicles delivered in the first batch, it is widely believed that the initial shipment includes a complete system package. This likely comprises the missile launch vehicle, command and control units, resupply trucks, and maintenance support elements. Additional deliveries are expected to follow in phases, with full operational capability expected to be achieved within the next two to three years.

The KHAN system’s mobility, accuracy, and extended range offer Indonesia a new level of operational flexibility and deterrence, particularly in an increasingly contested Indo-Pacific security environment. Its ability to rapidly shift firing positions and strike high-value targets from standoff distances makes it a potent asset in both defensive and offensive scenarios.

Beyond the ballistic missile program, Excalibur International is emerging as a key integration partner for Indonesia’s broader military modernization. The company is also supplying air defense systems under a separate contract, further deepening defense ties between Jakarta and European industry partners.
